Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Wins The Weekend At The Box Office As Assassin’s Creed Struggles

As expected, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dominated at the North American box office this weekend with a massive $96.1 million haul over the four-day holiday. That's taken its domestic total to an impressive $237.4 million, and while it's still a long way behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this is an incredible performance for Disney and Lucasfilm's first Anthology movie.

As expected, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, this is an incredible performance for Disney and Lucasfilm’s first Anthology movie.

It was Assassin’s Creed.

The video game adaptation earned an unimpressive $22.5 million during its first six days of release, which is pretty pathetic for what Ubisoft has envisioned as being the first of a trilogy. Like Warcraft, a strong showing overseas could help Assassin’s Creed, but it’s going to take a lot for the movie to earn back its whopping $125 million budget.

Why hasn’t it succeeded? Well, the reviews have been awful, so that likely killed any interest moviegoers had very early on. It is a shame, but in all honesty, it’s hard to imagine how Ubisoft ever thought it would be a good idea to pit the property against a box office behemoth like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the first place.
